you try to open your power windows and either nothing happens or in just drops into the door at the most inconvient times.

you hear the motor turning but the window doesn't move.

the chrysler dealer tells you that you need a new window regulator and say it will cost $350 to $450 to replace an item that should be on recall. chrysler knows this is a large problem to the point that many dealers carry the part in stock.

the real problem is a little plastic clip that holds the cable to the track breaks. while waiting for your parts, you may try to hold the window up in place with little suction cups like those on the old garfield cat you once stuck in your window. place them in the inside of the glass near the bottom of the window that you are currently holding up probably with the famous duct tape. get the tape off, it will mess up the paint. to get started you will need to order the parts. prices vary from $55 to $350 for the same part. unfortunately, you cannot just purchase the little plastic clip that breaks.

you can check out your local salvage yard and pull one out of a car that is damaged. i am not sure of that logic with a part that already breaks easily. you can also get one on the internet. check out this site for price comparisons. be sure you select exactly what you need and if needed with the motor. some listings do not include the motor and if you are taking the door apart, i recommend you get one with the motor just in case. if money is not problem you can always go to the dealer and pay way too much.

again, make sure you order the right part. specify right or left door, front or back door. the year might make a differance also. it is curved and needs to align with where the broken part is.

all of this does matter. to get started you will need:

new regulator
needle-nose pliers
socket wrench: 5/16, 10mm, and 1/4 sockets
screwdriver (phillips, flat, and medium-sized torx bits)
one hour of your time hey we are buring daylight, let's get started! the process:

1. take off the door panel. you’ll find 3 screws. one in the armrest, one behind a plastic cover near the sideview mirror, and a torx screw underneath the door handle — just pry it up like you’re opening the door and unscrew. the process:

(the upper left one should just be loosened so it will hang-in-place). do the same for the motor (3 screws). 12. now dislodge the entire regulator/motor assembly from the screw holes and tilt it sideways inside the door. slowly maneuver it to the hole below the speaker and pull the assembly out. yup, now you see that little plastic clip that broke and caused all of the $%^&* trouble. forget about trying to fix the clip. you are just wasting your time. 13. remove 3 screws on the motor connecting it to the regulator. 14. line up the new regulator the same way the old one was connected and install it. when you get the window back in, don’t forget to reinstall the pins! make sure when reinstalling that you put back the foam pads and rubber guard before you reattach the plastic door panel. it won’t fit correctly later. when reattaching the plastic panel, it will work better if you take out all of the plastic clasps that are stuck in the metal part of the door and insert them in their proper place in the plastic panel. that way you can bang the panel onto the door and they will lock in place in the holes of the door frame. 15. install everything in reverse order. once you get the new motor/regulator assembly back in, you can grab your door panel, hold it nearby, connect the power cables and test it before putting the window back in and reconnecting everything. the regulator should go up/down like you expect. that's all folks! that's all folks!
This lesson will walk you through the removal and replacement of the window regulator on the 1999 to 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
